Those words hit me pretty hard on the very first ES2007S lecture, when Dr. Jaidev was briefly telling us what to expect from this module. That sentence sums up why effective communication skills are vital for me. Being in my penultimate year means that I will be venturing into the corporate world soon. According to many, the recipe to landing a good first job is a “concoction” of good academic results and an impressive extra-curricular track record. However, those aside, I personally feel that being able to express your ideas effectively during job interviews, helps set you apart from the rest. I consider myself a very opinionated person and in order to convince others of my ideas, it is imperative that I am able to articulate my thoughts as clearly as possible.
Besides, as I hold several leadership positions in my hall of residence, effective communication skills are especially vital for me as I have to be able to outline my vision for the committees which are under my purview. Whether be it through email correspondences or verbal interactions, I have to disseminate clear instructions to my members in order to get a task accomplished in the best way possible. Of course, effective communication is not limited to work-related matters. Being able to communicate effectively allows me to express my feelings more accurately which in turn facilitates me in emotionally appealing to my committee members. Something which I greatly value as I wish to give my members a wholesome experience under my leadership- both professionally and personally,
In a nutshell, I strongly believe that possessing effective communication skills will bring me a long, long way in life- be it now, as a leader or soon, a fresh graduate seeking for a job of my dreams, and hopefully in future - as a manager heading a team of corporate elites :)
